More information:
A high school student has approached the Middle School for support in their senior Capstone

Project.  The Capstone Project is a new, unique approach to education that is being offered

as part of high school education at SAS. It challenges students to design and create their own

learning experience by pursuing an area of interest. The course is an opportunity for students

to merge their passions with their academic learning and so demonstrate the fullest extent

of their enthusiasm, autonomy, capacity, and complexity. Students may choose to sample a

potential career, carry out an extended service-learning project, deeply explore an academic

passion, or create a novel artistic work. The scope of these projects is limited only by the

student’s imagination.

With the support of an advisor, the students will determine the learning objectives, research

the topic, select the end of semester product, identify and receive support from an off-campus

mentor, and publicly present their results at the end of the semester.

The student, encouraged by the dance program throughout middle and high school,

has decided to pursue her passion for dance.  She will be refining the professional skills

necessary to have a career in the dance industry by setting a dance of her own with two

select performers.  As the highlight of her project, she will be traveling to Hong Kong with

her team to show their work, receive critique, and be ranked by a panel of respected

choreographers.

As with any school-sponsored trip, a member of the SAS faculty will be chaperoning.  To fund

the chaperone’s flight and accommodations, this student has worked with the middle school

in setting up dance workshops.  She has been a significant contributor to the Middle School

students’ dance experience during her High School tenure.

Middle school administration believes that in pursuit of a well-rounded student, extracurricular

activities should be free of charge to encourage students to try a variety of activities.  In this

case however, administration wishes to support the capstone student in her unique learning

opportunity and recognize that it is not only an invaluable experience for her, but also for the

students who may participate as they watch the process unfold.

Participation in these workshops with extra performance opportunities will be available to

a maximum of 20 middle school students, first come first served, and will run on Tuesdays

from 3:00-4:00.  For S$50.00, students may participate in 10 rehearsals and showcase their

routine at four performances: Alice (High School Dance Club), the Middle School Dance

Club show, Food Fest, and an independent showing organized by the capstone student.  All

information will be posted on the middle school dance board outside S129.

If you have questions regarding the details of the workshop please contact Alex Koncki,

Senior HS student.  (Handphone: 82333762 / Email: alexkoncki@hotmail.com)
